Empowering Wellness: Twinkle Porwal’s Journey from Pre-Diabetes to Health Coach Extraordinaire.
In the bustling rhythm of modern life, health often takes a back seat. For me, it took a sudden twist when I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes despite being an avid marathon runner and fitness enthusiast. I am Twinkle Porwal, a mother, pet mother, and certified health coach (IIN, New York). This unexpected revelation became a catalyst for me to transform and begin a journey from a health-conscious individual to a certified health coach.
My story is not just about overcoming a personal health challenge. It’s a roadmap to the power of resilience, determination, and the potential for positive change through simple lifestyle adjustments that I made. Facing the question of how someone like me, who was so physically active, could fall prey to pre-diabetes, I started the journey to find answers to them and, in the process, discovered the pivotal role that insulin played in controlling blood sugar levels.
Insulin, often overlooked in the complexity of our body’s functions, emerges as a critical player in maintaining the body’s equilibrium. Every time we consume food, especially carbohydrates, our blood sugar levels rise; in response, the pancreas releases insulin. Insulin travels from glucose to the cells, providing the energy needed for day-to-day bodily functions. Insulin signals the liver to store blood sugar for emergencies when food is unavailable. However, the problem arises when the cells become resistant to insulin due to excess release, leading to health issues, including obesity, Type 2 diabetes, PCOD, coronary heart disease, and even dementia.
Our body’s fat storage mechanism is designed to protect us during times of scarcity. However, in the modern era of abundance, our ancient genes struggle to cope with the excess intake of contemporary diets. The body recognises only three macronutrients—proteins, Carbohydrates, and Fats—and converts all the consumed food into glucose (Carbohydrates), amino acids(Proteins), and fatty acids(Fats). Excessive intake, especially of carbohydrates, leads to heightened blood sugar levels, triggering an overproduction of insulin.
This is explained in detail in the Two Compartment Model theory by Dr. Jason Fung. As per the theory, the food we eat, especially carbohydrates, is broken down to sugar, which enters the body and raises the blood glucose levels; in turn, cells release insulin to control the blood sugar levels. Every time we eat, insulin is released, which means excess carbohydrates release excess insulin. Over a while, the cells refuse to accept the glucose, and the insulin removes the excess sugar from the blood to store it as fat in our muscle, liver, and adipose tissue. This is where the problem starts: the cells gradually become resistant to insulin.

The solution I discovered and successfully implemented in my life lies in reversing insulin resistance through mindful dietary and lifestyle changes.
My comprehensive approach includes:
- Intermittent fasting or restricting eating time.
- Reducing carbohydrates and processed food intake.
- Avoiding polyunsaturated oils.
- Engaging in regular physical activity (40-60 mins a day).
- Getting sufficient sleep (7-8 hours).
- Practising stress reduction through breathwork.
- Minimising exposure to chemicals, preservatives, radiation, and white light.
The emphasis here is the need for patience and consistency, urging individuals to refrain from drastic measures like:
- Starving ourselves in the name of diet or weight loss
- Recklessly exercising without a proper diet.
- Including high glycemic food in the concept of calorie counting.
Following these recommendations, the realistic timeline for significant changes is approximately 8-9 months. Results include weight loss and improved energy levels, inflammation reduction, and the restoration of metabolic function.
In closing, my journey is the best example and hope for those struggling with lifestyle diseases. I was successful in reversing insulin resistance, which inspired countless women seeking a holistic approach to health. As a health coach, I have tried to touch many people’s lives by imparting valuable lessons on the importance of embracing sustainable habits for long-term well-being.
