STRAND BOOKSTORE

The Strand Bookstore is a ninety-four years old bookstore located in the city of New York. In addition to the primary location in Manhattan, there is a store on Columbus Avenue and kiosks in Central Park, Times Square and the airport.

Called ‘the undisputed king of the city’s independent bookstores, the company goes by the slogan ’18 Miles Of Books’, which pretty much sums up the store’s ethos.

Strand goes back to 1927 when Ben Bass set it up on Fourth Avenue on what was then called “Book Row”, which housed forty-eight bookstores. Ben wanted to create a place where book lovers could congregate and discuss books. The bookstore was named after The Strand in London.

Ben’s son Fred took over the store and moved it to its present location in 1957. And then came Fred’s daughter Nancy who joined the Strand team at the age of twenty-five to carry forward the family legacy.

The store carries over 2.5 million used, new and rare books covering topics from the occult to finance to philosophy. The store also offers an array of literary gifts and goods, from Moleskines to coffee mugs.

The employees are knowledgeable and passionate about books and can offer valuable suggestions. In addition, the store regularly organizes author-related events, which keep people engaged and entertained.
