Money Is More Than What You Can Buy

BEFORE YOU EARN | FOR HER

PART I

Money Is More Than What You Can Buy

When we talk to girls about money, the conversation often starts with:

“Save some.”
“Don’t spend too much.”
“Money is hard to earn.”

All true.

But perhaps we should start somewhere else.

What does money mean to you?

Choice.

Confidence.

Security.

Independence.

And eventually, the ability to make decisions without having to depend on someone else to make them for you.

That is why financial literacy for girls should begin long before the first salary.

Your pocket money is already teaching you.

When you decide whether to spend it all or save some, you’re learning. When you save for something you really want, you’re learning. When you understand where your money goes, you’re learning.

A 16 year old I know used to get ₹200 a week. For months, she set aside ₹50 of it, nothing dramatic, no spreadsheet, just a jar on her desk, until she’d saved enough for a camera she’d wanted for over a year. When she finally bought it, what stayed with her wasn’t the camera. It was the realization that she hadn’t needed anyone’s permission or approval to get there. She had simply decided, and then she had followed through.

Say you get ₹500. You could spend it on a phone case that catches your eye in the moment, or you could hold off, and a week later put it toward the earphones you’ve actually wanted for months. Same ₹500. Very different outcome. That gap between the two is where financial confidence starts to build.

Here’s another important lesson:

Earning more doesn’t automatically mean managing money better.

Someone can earn a lot and spend everything. Someone else can earn less, plan carefully, save consistently and build wealth over time.

The goal isn’t to become the girl who owns the most. The goal is to become the woman who understands her money and can make informed choices about it.

Try This

The next time you receive ₹1,000, don’t immediately ask: “What can I buy?”

Ask: “What can this money do for me?”

Perhaps you spend some. Save some. Or put some aside for a goal that matters to you.

The Takeaway

Your first financial decision matters more than your first salary, because it’s the one that teaches you how to make every decision after it.

And every girl deserves the confidence to make those decisions.
